SUPPORT OUR SOCIAL INSURANCE PROGRAMS. CUT THE MILITARY BUDGET, NOT PROGRAMS THAT HELP PEOPLE
As you’ve surely heard, there
are several critical issues coming to a head over the next month and a half in
Washington. Peaceworks encourages you to follow this set of issues and make
your voices heard. Over the next several weeks we will be posting more info on
this here in our updates, on our website and on our Facebook page. For now, here’s
a sample message we’ve shared with the President:
Dear President Obama,
Congratulations on your
reelection. I am writing to implore you not to make any deal that drives our
economy off a cliff. If there’s one spending category where our deficit can,
and should, be cut, it’s wasteful, unneeded military expenditures. We currently
spend vastly more than is needed for our nation’s defense, so deep cuts, even
deeper than required by the sequester, would be beneficial.
Please, Mr. President, do
not even consider proposals to cut our social insurance programs—Social
Security and Medicare—or Medicaid. Likewise, programs that invest in people,
education, green energy and infrastructure should be maintained. The proper
prescription is more progressive taxation and cuts to the bloated Pentagon
budget, not cuts to programs that help people and the environment. Thank you,
